Being Ms. Universe 2021-2022 was a dream come true. From the
moment that the crown was placed on my head, I became part of an
amazing sisterhood. I first would like to say that this year
could not have been such a success without the love and support
of my fellow sister queens. I couldn't have asked for better
women and friends. For Lynda, my pageant Mama and Executive
Director your love and support have been a highlight of my time
as Ms. Universe. To Bill Hall the owner of the Ms. Universe
Pageant, you kept me laughing at your jokes and supported me
during some difficult times such as the loss of my mother six
weeks into my reign and in December of 2021 the death of my
fellow sister queen Renee Reynolds-Lawson. You gave me the time
to grieve while also giving me wonderful support in my duties as
Ms. Universe. It has been one of the great honors of my life to
represent your system and to hopefully be a positive role model
for change in the world.
During the Interview portion of the pageant, I was asked the
question about "What would I have hoped to achieve at the end of
my time as Ms. Universe"? I talked about sisterhood, community
and most importantly about continuing the advocacy work on the
issues of homelessness that I have worked on for the last decade.
I am proud to say that I used my reign as Ms. Universe to speak
out on the importance of providing opportunities for those
experiencing homelessness and sharing my own story of overcoming
homelessness and poverty to become a successful attorney. I had
the opportunity during my year to speak with numerous community
groups both in person and virtually, read to school children
about having good self-esteem, I was the Martin Luther King Jr.
Day Speaker at a local Church, volunteered my time at local
homeless shelters and advocated in our state capital in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on behalf of homeless children. I was
featured in several media outlets and was on the cover of Crowns
Magazine April 2022 Edition. My last appearance as Ms. Universe
was on June 30, 2022 in San Diego as the Keynote Speaker at the
Doors of Change Concert of Hope to benefit homeless youth. This
event had special meaning to me because San Diego is where my
family had experienced homelessness when I was between the ages
of 9-10 and at 15 years old. It was a full circle moment to
return home as an attorney, as the reigning Ms. Universe 2021-
2022 and as an example of what people can achieve with hard work
and the right resources.
Lastly, none of this would have been possible without the love
and support of my family and friends affectionately known as “The
Glossy Posse”. The captain of the Glossy Posse is Ira Anthony who
is my MUA and Stylist Extraordinaire. You have been with me from
the beginning of my pageant journey and I could not have done any
of this without you.
There is so much sacrifice of time and effort that goes into
being a Queen and that is shared by my friends and family. To my
fiancé Gaetan Alfano, you have been by my side during this entire
reign and I could not asked for a better or more supportive
partner. I can’t wait to be your wife in a few months and to
start the next part of our life together. I love you with all my
heart.
I promise to continue my advocacy work on behalf of those
experiencing homelessness and I will always be grateful for this
amazing opportunity. For the last time, I’m Nikki Johnson-Huston,
Esq. your Ms. Universe 2021-2022.
