Thank you so much to Nadiri Ali and Temple University Black Law
Student’s Association for the invitation to be part of a panel
for Black History month talking about my experience as a black
lawyer and Ms. Universe 2021-2022
I had a wonderful time as the virtual Black History Month Speaker
for the USDA Eastern Regional Research Center on Wednesday,
February 16, 2023. I spoke about my journey out of homelessness
and how to find a way to Black Wealth, Health and Success in
2022.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend Speaker For New
Church Live (Link) https://newchurchlive.tv/videos/nikki-johnson-
huston-interview/
My cause is finding solutions to end homelessness, especially as
it relates to women and children.
I experienced homelessness for almost a year when I was between
the ages of 9-10 years old, at 15 and for the last time at 19
years old. This experience has had a lasting impact on my life
and I am committed to helping others overcome the challenges that
come with having experienced homelessness.
I have been an advocate on the issues of homelessness, poverty,
women’s empowerment and educational opportunity for the last
decade and I want to be a positive role model to show that if we
invest in those suffering from poverty and homelessness and give
them access to resources like education and social services there
is no challenge that they can’t overcome and nothing they can’t
achieve. I went from homeless to living my dream of becoming a
successful attorney to now being Ms. Universe.
My goal for my reign is to bring more awareness and visibility to
the issue of homelessness, to encourage our leaders to invest
more resources into solving these issues and I will be partnering
with organizations who work with these communities to hopefully
empower individuals who are dealing with these issues to believe
that they can make significant and long lasting changes to their
lives.
I also would like to grow awareness in the pageant community
about the Ms. Universe Pageant and what a great organization it
is in helping women to achieve their dreams and to shine an
important light on their platforms and community service.
I would like to highlight the work of The Good Shepard Homeless
Shelter, Holy Cross Church Food Pantry, The Homeless Advocacy
Project, The Career Wardrobe and The People’s Emergency Center.
